Introduction to the Ear Microsystem
NEUROVA is a device based on the central philosophy of modern auriculotherapy. Our treatments are based on the inverted fetus perspective of auricular point locations on the ear. Conditions affecting the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of our patients are assumed to be treatable on the ear by exact auricular stimulation. It is this central philosophy that we at Neurova embody and although commonly used in difficult pain presentations, the only limits placed on the NEUROVA are the ones placed on it by the practitioner. It is our pledge that we give you the tools to expand your limits!
The capability of reflex points on the external ear to alter neuromuscular and neuropathic disorders has been attributed to the descending pain inhibitory pathways of the central nervous system. The inverted fetus perspective of the somatotopic arrangement of auricular acupuncture points was first described in the 1950’s by Dr. Paul Nogier of France, and has received scientific support from double blind studies examining auricular diagnosis of musculoskeletal and of coronary disorders. Acupuncture points on the ear and on the body have lower levels of electrical skin resistance than surrounding tissue. These electro-dermal differences are apparently related to autonomic control of blood vessels rather than increased sweat gland activity. The heightened tenderness of reactive acupuncture points may be explained by the accumulation of noxious, sub dermal substances. Electrical stimulation of specific points on the external ear leads to site specific neural responses in different regions of the brain.
Dr. Nogier theorized that similar to acupuncture points on the body, the points on the ear have lower levels of electrical skin resistance than the surrounding tissue. He also discovered the anatomical localization of the vertebrae on the anti – helix area and theorized that the ear presented the body in an inverted fetus perspective. The treatment of the auricle was not Chinese in origin but rather the central philosophy of Nogiers auriculotherapy is that there is a somatotopic representation of the body as a whole inverted fetus perspective.
Critical clinical effective outcomes in therapy using the NEUROVA depend on locating the most effective auricular point location. The patients chief complaint and the area of the auricle that presents the somatotopic presentation of the complaints auricular location as found by measuring electrical conductivity using a bipolar point locator. NEUROVA is unique in our insistence on using the exact measurements found in a biploar point locator to find the pathological area on the auricle. The point finder we have chosen has all of the available benefits of a bipolar point locator, it allows practitioners to easily identify the most effective treatment site on the ear, mark it and if needed compare the treatment location with other points that correspond to nearby anatomical zones on the body. This allows the practitioner to prioritize treatments objectively and insures the best of clinical outcomes for the NEUROVA. These are but a few of the advantages we present over our competition not the least of which is clinically effective zones for treatment as evidenced by 60 years of auricular point location validity and recently fMRI research validating the topographical locations.
The bipolar point locator and use of the auricular microsystem are two of the greatest differences in the Neurova way of therapy and other device philosophies.
The inverted fetus perspective of the arrangement of auricular acupuncture points received scientific support from double-blind study examining the auricular diagnosis of. musculoskeletal and coronary disorders and currently with the use of fMRI.. The mechanism of auriculotherapy is suggested to be mediated at least in part by activation of the descending inhibitory pain control system, activation of the proprio spinal heteroseg mental antinociceptive system and activation of long lasting pain induced changes by the release of endogenous opioid peptides in the spinal cord.
In addition innervation of the ear by the vagus and trigeminal nerve offer the following insights, the vagus. nerve carries the parasympathetic fibers and a branch of the trigeminal nerve carries the sympathetic fibers to the brains reticular formation the nerve impulses carried gets distributed to the corresponding brain structures with a 75 percent share of all para sympathetic fibers. The vagus nerve has the highest influence on the parasympathetic nervous system- the afferent fibers of the vagus nerve synapse and structures in the medulla and the afferent fibers of the vagus nerve lead to the lung, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and kidneys.
Auriculotherapy, or auricular therapy, is based on the idea that the ear is a microsystem which reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear. Conditions affecting the physical, mental or emotional health of the patient are assumed to be treatable by stimulation of the surface of the ear exclusively.
Auriculotherapy and especially electrical stimulation of auricular points has been effective on both acute and chronic pain. It is successfuly used in decreasing post – operative pain yields the following benefits: not only pain relief but a decrease of analgesic requirements. Auricular acupuncture was effective in many cases especially in the treatment of hypertension, acute pain of the digestive system, dermatological diseases as well as obesity. Due to the small amounts of treated people as well as reviewable randomized control studies, the quality of reviews of these studies was insufficient to draw conclusions but it still showed that auriculotherapy has the potential of being effective not only in pain therapy but also many other fields of medicine.
Recent reviews of auricular acupuncture offer insights into vast fields of applications. In 1970 Dr. H. L. Wen of Hong Kong conducted the first clinical studies of the efficacy of electro ear acupuncture for the treatment of chemical dependency. Currently Col Richard Neimtzow MD developed a generalized auricular treatment for pain reduction which he called Battlefield Acupuncture.
